{"id":18924,"date":"2021-01-20T16:26:58","date_gmt":"2021-01-20T15:26:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/catapa.be\/?p=18924"},"modified":"2021-02-04T18:08:40","modified_gmt":"2021-02-04T17:08:40","slug":"worker-driven-monitoring-of-mining-the-mining-sector","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/catapa.be\/en\/worker-driven-monitoring-of-mining-the-mining-sector\/","title":{"rendered":"Worker Driven Monitoring of the Mining Sector"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"wpb-content-wrapper\"><p>[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]NEWS:<\/p>\n<h1 id=\"seo_h1_tag\" class=\"_5gmx\" style=\"text-align: center;\" data-testid=\"event-permalink-event-name\">Worker Driven Monitoring of the Mining Sector<\/h1>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>CATAPA is entering a new partnership which will trial worker-driven monitoring of mining operations across three continents.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A new pilot project has been launched, in which <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/electronicswatch.org\/en\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Electronics Watch<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> will be cooperating with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cisep.org.bo\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">CISEP<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and CATAPA to establish worker-driven monitoring in the tin mines in Oruro, Bolivia.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The goal of this project is to put in place a monitoring tool for public procurers to check their supply chains from the mining stage. Using a bottom-up approach the ambition is to improve working conditions for miners and stop further environmental degradation to those areas that directly affect communities downstream.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As a first step in the process, Electronics Watch with linguistic support from CATAPA provided 4 monitoring training sessions, focusing on:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The strengths of public procurement and the Electronics Watch model<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Methods for worker-driven monitoring<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Analysis of results and options for remediation<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Reporting the findings and engaging companies<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Similar monitoring projects are also being set up by Electronics Watch with partners in the <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/parc-jp.org\/english\/index.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Philippines<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (nickel mines) and the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sarwatch.co.za\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Democratic Republic of Congo<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (cobalt mines), in addition to Bolivia (Tin).
