En El Nombre Del Litio: Clean Energy, For Who?<\/h1>\n

With eyes of water that see the birth and death of time<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

I am healing the wounds of being<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

Don’t kill me or poison me<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

Don’t make me part of that suffering<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

You are death, I am life<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

You are the lithium, I am the feeling of the pacha<\/span><\/i>[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]CATAPA held a screening of the documentary \u2018En el Nombre del Litio\u2019 at Studio Skoop, Gent on the 29th March as part of Belmundo Festival 2022.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Eighty percent of the world’s lithium reserves are located in the \u2018Lithium Triangle\u2019; the salt flats that connect Argentina, Bolivia and Chile<\/span><\/a>. The film depicts the disastrous consequences of lithium extraction for the indigenous communities of the Salares Grandes. <\/span>Producing a single ton of lithium carbonate requires two million litres of water. <\/b>And where is this lithium going? <\/span>Each electric vehicle, central to the EU\u2019s \u2018green transition\u2019 away from petrol and diesel based private transport, contains 4.5 kilograms of lithium.<\/b><\/p>\n

\u201c\u00bfEnerg\u00eda limpia para qui\u00e9n?\u201d <\/span><\/i>(Clean energy for who?) (Clemente Flores, El Moreno)<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]After the screening, participants were challenged by Yblin Escobar Roman (CATAPA)\u00a0 to think about the connections between the documentary and material consumption within the European Union and Belgium. Under the guise of <\/span>\u2018green mining\u2019,<\/span><\/a> the EU\u2019s <\/span>Critical Raw Materials<\/span><\/a> list outlines a strategy for the resourcing of over thirty mined resources, such as lithium, deemed \u2018necessary\u2019 for the green transition. To fund the \u2018green transition\u2019,<\/span> by 2050 the EU will require sixty times more lithium for electric vehicle batteries and energy storage<\/b><\/a> versus current supply.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Electric vehicles are not the solution to our climate crisis. Our push for \u2018green mobility\u2019 is steeped in the same extractivist logic that views our planet as an inexhaustible resource to be mined and dominated by humankind. But this fails to understand the fundamental contradiction:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

We cannot mine our way out of the climate crisis<\/i><\/b><\/h3>\n

[\/vc_column_text][vc_single_image image=”28973″ img_size=”large” alignment=”center”][vc_column_text]This contradiction is at the heart of \u2018El Nombre Del Litio\u2019. Due to the harsh conditions, only microorganisms are adapted to survive within the Salar basin. Living under the salars, colonies, or \u2018forests\u2019 of microorganisms engaging in photosynthesis, have served as a carbon sink for over 3.5 billion years, releasing oxygen and creating our ozone layer. Yet, in the name of tackling the climate crisis, transnational corporations are extracting vast quantities of water from the basin, starving and destroying the very microorganisms that allow our continued existence on Mother Earth.<\/span>[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n

A Just Transition to Accessible, Carbon Zero Transport<\/i><\/strong><\/h4>\n

Rather than maintaining the status quo by switching to electric cars, a just transition requires a fundamental re-organisation of our cities and communities towards zero emission <\/span>public, not private<\/span><\/i> transportation. Transportation accounts for 27% of global emissions.C40 Cities argue limiting global warming to 1.5 degrees celsius requires <\/span>doubling public transport use within cities by 2030<\/span><\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Despite this, De Lijn\u2019s latest plans will oversee the <\/span>removal of 1 in 7 bus stops in Ghent – around 200 in total<\/span><\/a>.<\/span> Zonder Bushalte Straat<\/span><\/a>, an action group campaigning against these changes, argues this will inevitably prevent older and less mobile citizens from accessing and traversing the city.\u00a0<\/span>[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n

A Just Transition to the Right to Say No<\/i><\/strong><\/h4>\n

The documentary also emphasises that a just transition requires indigenous and local communities having the Right to Say No to mining. Local communities must not only have the decisive, legally binding say over the fate of mining projects, this must be <\/span>respected<\/span><\/i>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

I was born in the countryside,<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

I am the son of a peasant<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

I defend my tradition,<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

Of all the Argentine north<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

My father is the Cha\u00f1i mountain<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

My mother the white Salar<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

During the documentary, the indigenous communities discuss <\/span>Kachi-Yupi <\/span><\/a>(literal translation: salt tracks), a document they collectively produced for the consultation process.Together with international laws on<\/span> Free, Prior and Informed Consent,<\/span><\/a> this document demands mining companies must seek approval from all of the indigenous communities of the Salinas Grandes and Laguna de Guayatayoc basin before proceeding with an activity or project. Despite promises, the document was never formalised into an official decree. Instead, the Argentinian state transferred ownership of the lands to <\/span>JEMSE<\/span><\/a> to pursue lithium extraction for the sake of \u2018development\u2019 without consent.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIf communities aren\u2019t participating actively in the state, the state is meaningless\u2019 <\/span><\/i>(Clemente Flores, El Moreno)<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]Companies also seek \u2018Social Licence to Operate\u2019 by dividing communities with false promises of jobs, development and security. In the documentary, EXAR promised lithium mining would directly and indirectly provide around eight hundred jobs to the local community for over thirty years.<\/span><\/p>\n

Whilst large-scale mining projects may provide jobs in the short term, the long-term destruction is incomparable. The loss of water is disrupting pastoral agriculture, an activity the community has relied on for thousands of years. Once mining projects are completed, the jobs are also taken with them, leaving behind a community contaminated and fractured by violence and conflict.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cMining is bread for today, but hunger for tomorrow\u201d <\/span><\/i>(Gil Cruz, Susques)<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]In response, the indigenous communities of the Salinas Grandes and Guayatayoc Lagoon mobilised to protest the violation of international law on indigenous rights, the failure to consult the collective assembly by lithium mining companies operating in Quebrale\u00f1a territory and to demand an end to all mining activities in the area.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI give my life for the Salar. I cannot accept this.If you want, kill me first. Then you will pass through the Salar.<\/span><\/i>\u201d (Veronica Chavez, Santuario Tres Pozos)<\/span><\/p>\n

Our transition to sustainable energy must only be green, but <\/span>just. <\/span><\/i>This cannot be achieved through our current path of continued extractivism, which promises nothing but destruction. We are at a crossroads. Rather than extracting lithium for electric cars, our society must be based on social and environmental justice where the extraction of non-renewable resources is no longer necessary.<\/span>[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]Water, little water<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n
