Last weekend\u2019s <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">consulta popular<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on the future of the Choc\u00f3 Andino and Yasun\u00ed turned out to be a seismic event. The effort of local communities and campaigners led to results that demonstrate a path forward for popular democracy and the defence of culture and nature for generations to come across South America and the world.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In a truly landmark move, the people of Quito overwhelmingly voted to protect the Choc\u00f3 Andino from metal mining &#8211; <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/elecciones2023.cne.gob.ec\/Consultas\/choco\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">an average of 68% in favour of a future without mining across the four questions<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. In doing so, the people recognised the integrality of the Choc\u00f3 Andino biosphere reserve &#8211; commonly known as \u2018the lungs of Quito\u2019 for sustaining life in the capital and beyond. <\/span><b>The popularity of the Quito Sin Miner\u00eda campaign demonstrates the support for an alternative vision for the area, based upon interdependence, respect and living in harmony with nature through a solidarity economy of agroecology and eco-tourism<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The success (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/elecciones2023.cne.gob.ec\/Consultas\/yasuni\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">with 59% of the vote<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) of the Yasun\u00ed referendum, is the result of more than ten years of fighting by organisations and collectives such as Yasunidos across three governments to hold a popular consultation on the protection of the national park from oil extraction.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yasun\u00ed is one of the most biodiverse areas on the planet, and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.oas.org\/es\/cidh\/prensa\/comunicados\/2020\/245.asp#:~:text=Los%20Tagaeri%20y%20Taromenane%20son,dependencia%20con%20su%20entorno%20ecol%C3%B3gico.\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is home to the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Waorani, as well as the<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tagaeri and Taromenane &#8211; the last two remaining indigenous populations living in voluntary isolation in Ecuador.<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> As a result of the consultation, Petroecuador will have one year to abandon oil extraction and leave the area. With this victory, the Ecuadorian people are paving the way forward for the popular defence of our planet against climate change, a path which we must all follow.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Both popular consultations were undeniably centred around <\/span><b>an alternative vision for the organisation of Ecuadorian society and its relationship to nature<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. It would be a mistake to believe that the referendums solely fought for the democratic <a href=\"https:\/\/catapa.be\/en\/how-we-work\/catapa-campaigns-and-projects\/right-to-say-no\/\">right of the people to say &#8216;No&#8217;<\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0and reject extractivism. In reality, the campaigns also fought for their <\/span><b><i>Right to Say \u2018Yes\u2019 <\/i><\/b><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">to the Choc\u00f3 Andino and <\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yasun\u00ed<\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">; <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0to protect traditions, cultures, economies, and ways of living in harmony with nature that have existed long before multinational corporations entered these areas against their will with a proposal of \u201cdevelopment and progress\u201d that is incapable of sustaining life.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As CATAPA, we recognise that the struggle to protect the Choc\u00f3 Andino and <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yasun\u00ed <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">does not end with the results of the popular referendums. <\/span><b>The government of Guillermo Lasso must comply with its constitutional obligations and respect the will of the Ecuadorian people by immediately putting into action the dismantling of operations in Block 43-ITT, <\/b><b>Yasun\u00ed<\/b><b>. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We support the statement of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Yasunidos\/status\/1694555470789218673?s=20\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yasunidos<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and will be closely following the situation as it develops.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We remain vigilant to ensure the will of the Ecuadorian people is respected and upheld, and that no mining or oil companies attempt to enter the regions and restart operations.<\/span>[\/vc_column_text][vc_cta h2=&#8221;Would you like to contribute too?&#8221; add_button=&#8221;bottom&#8221; btn_title=&#8221;Donate and support the Right To Say No&#8221; btn_color=&#8221;success&#8221; btn_align=&#8221;center&#8221; btn_link=&#8221;url:https%3A%2F%2Fcatapa.be%2Fen%2Fhow-we-work%2Fcatapa-campaigns-and-projects%2Fright-to-say-no%2Fright-to-say-no-gathering-in-the-andes-region%2F|target:_blank&#8221;]Are you moved by what you read and wondering how you can contribute to this fight?
