Are you curious where the metals in your smartphone come from?

Do you know that mining is related to human rights abuses and environmental destruction? Do you want to obtain more knowledge, skills and experience in making a positive change? Then join CATAPA’s changemaker programme. During the programme you will acquire in-depth knowledge of the ecological and socio-economic impact of mining and acquire skills and strategies of activism. Throughout the year you will gain insight in how a grassroots movement functions and how you can set up public actions and awareness raising activities to create change.

What is the Changemakers programme?

The changemakers programme is designed for people who are concerned about the current global system and its impact on humans and nature, and who want to act for change. As a changemaker, you will receive training and will be guided to take up an active role within CATAPA, according to your own capacities.

The programme is part of the larger Make ICT Fair project, where we work on awareness raising on the issues in the ICT-industry, with a specific focus on mining.

 

What does the programme look like?

The programme starts in October, with a training weekend on the impact of mining, the ICT-industry and on campaigning skills. The exact programme changes every year, so keep an eye on our activity page and/or on our Facebook page! This will be followed by the development of a public action. Further onwards, you are invited to join our movement weekend and learn in an interactive way how a movement can contribute to change. We encourage you to use your skills by giving a workshop, organise an awareness raising event, accompany an international guest speaker during the Open Min(e)d week in Belgium… or come up with your own idea!

At the end of June, you are invited to an international training in the UK, organised by our partner People & Planet, where you will be able to broaden your knowledge, advance your activist skills and exchange your experiences within an international group.

Does this sound overwhelming? There is no need to. Everyone can take part at their own pace, and throughout the programme we will organise follow-up moments with all changemakers.

 

Who can attend?

The changemakers’ programme welcomes everyone who:

  • is interested in themes of mining, ICT value chains, human rights, sustainable development, international solidarity or related topics.
  • has the willingness to learn and engage within CATAPA
  • feels comfortable to communicate in English

 

How to enroll?

Ideally, the programme starts in October, or with the international training at the end of June in the UK. However, you don’t need to wait for then to join us. Have a look at how to become a volunteer, or come to one of our activities!
